Top 5 Summer Reads

It’s that time of the year where, if we’re lucky, we have a break of some kind on the near horizon. And very often the intense routine can ease off for a couple of months. So, what better time to plan some reading fodder?!

This is our top 5 that we can’t wait to get stuck into over the summer holidays. It’s not to say we will manage all of them, but they will accompany us, and that is half the battle!

Here’s a small outline as to why we’ve chosen each of the books and a link for you to get your own copy:

1. The Positive Habit: 6 Steps for Transforming Negative Thoughts to Positive Emotions

The Positive Habit says that the six emotions that are at play in terms of having a positive or negative outlook are Love, Calmness, Confidence, Gratitude, Hope and Happiness. In this book Fiona Brennan, clinical hypnotherapist, writes a chapter on each of these emotions and there are also guided audio hypnotherapies that you can access online to accompany the book. I look forward to feeling and acting more positive having read this book.

2. The Source: Open Your Mind, Change Your Life

Now this book has been seen in many a celeb’s paw on Instagram and with good reason. Written by neuroscientist Dr. Tara Swart the book aims to show us how to actively change the way our brains work. Sounds interesting and powerful and certainly a very topical subject.

3. Just One More Question: Stories from a Life in Neurology

Unusual and interesting human stories are always appealling, so this book full of short chapters each one an experience of Niall Tubridy, professor of neurology, with a patient (or in some instances an amalgamation of cases). Given the specialty of neurology the cases are highly unusual, sometimes amusing and other times bemusing and very often heartwrenching. Try not to become a hypochondriac by the end of the book though!

4. I Found My Tribe

Written by Ruth Fitzmaurice, this book is about a woman whose “tribe is her children and her film-maker husband, Simon, who has motor neurone disease and can only communicate with his eyes.” She finds her other “tribe” of women who swim in the Irish sea on a daily basis and meet together as a way of coping with the extreme situations life throws at them. The reviews since it came out in 2018 have been incredible. This might just top the list.

5. This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor

This award winning best seller by doctor-turned-comedian, (yes you read that right) Adam Kay, is a diary from his experience as a junior doctor in the NHS and the horrors that go with it. Told in a hilarious way this book is equally heartbreaking. Worth the read.

Hopefully you’ve been inspired by our list. Now you just need to find yourself a quiet spot to read, relax and rejuvenate!
